As a general rule it is better to grow the smaller varieties of Mediterranean tomato in city gardens where they have restricted exposure. However, over the last 2 years the raised bed in this garden has been used to experiment with Eastern European varieties which produce larger tomatoes and can put up with the restricted conditions. The results have been impressive.
Anyone producing larger quantities of tomatoes should invest in an electric dehydrator/drier. While the garden produces a steady supply of tomatoes for fresh use throughout the summer months, it is well worth looking to process surpluses when they come. This can be done by making sauces etc or by simply drying the mixed varieties for use through the winter months.
