It has been an exceptionally good year for tomatoes (so far) and an even better year for trying out new varieties. The Russian and Eastern European varieties were all started before the European and Mediterranean varieties and are now coming into full bloom while the regular European types are still green. It is amazing to have full crops of tomatoes ready so early in the season.
In general, it has always been recommended to grow the smaller varieties of tomatoes in city conditions just to ensure a reasonable crop. These exotic types from the east produce full size beefsteak tomatoes before the smaller European varieties have even set colour. It will be interesting to see how long the plants continue producing new tomatoes as the main European tomato season gets going.
