Tomatoes grow well in small city gardens. A raised bed is the best way to grow them though large pots work well also. This raised bed is 5m by 1m with the garden wall behind it and a support framework of aluminium poles built over it. This year the bed was used for 18 types of tomatoes, 10 of them new varieties to this garden. Gardeners love trying new things.
The challenge with growing tomatoes in a small area intensively is to mix the varieties both for type and for harvesting. The regular tomato types, Borghese, Ailsa Craig and Moneymaker produce small sweet tomatoes over a several week period. The larger types, Roman Candle, Caspian Pink and Druzba produce fewer tomatoes but of a larger size. In this way weekly harvests are mixed and unusual.
