The summer heatwaves of recent years have meant it is now possible to grow chilli peppers and tomatoes outdoors in Belgium. However, while the rise in temperatures has made this possible, the disruptions in weather this last summer may be an indicator that not all is rosy in the garden. Still, chilli peppers are remarkably robust plants once established and even in less than ideal conditions will produce well.
Chilli peppers have had a bad press in many ways with people assuming they are grown for their painfully hot flavours. This should not be the case. The sweet chilli’s are far from hot. The hotter chilli’s, when used in moderation, have distinctive flavours which work well in many forms of cooking. The hottest chilli’s are best used in sauces and jams where a little heat goes a long way. Chilli jam is the favourite in this garden.
