When planning a garden for the year it is important not to be set in your ways and just keep repeating the same exercise from previous years. It is always worth changing things around and trying out new things.
For several years we used this corner beside the stairs to produce about 12 tomato plants, each a different species. This provided a permanent bowl of multi colour tomatoes on the table all summer. Not bad for two square metres.
In recent years we have switched to courgette plants for that spot. Two good plants in a container provide well for the summer. We have another container of courgettes on another spot. The corners and edges of a garden, especially a small garden, are often the most important areas for creating a productive garden.
